The UAE Financial Intelligence Unit participated in a panel discussion titled “Fortifying Defenses Against Financial Crime in Conflict Zones” in the ACAMS MENA Assembly 2025.
During the session, the UAEFIU highlighted high-risk typologies in conflict zones, including drug trafficking, smuggling of precious metals and stones from areas of conflict, trade-based money laundering, terrorist financing, and specifically trade-based terrorist financing.
The panel also addressed the critical role of NPOs and emphasized the importance of recognizing their essential humanitarian work in isolated regions, while encouraging reporting entities to understand the nature of their operations, transactions, and geographic exposure to effectively assess potential risks.
In addition, the UAEFIU shared practical measures and case insights to help reporting entities tailor monitoring scenarios that better address risks associated with conflict zones.
